The FIRST Program

FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is a multinational non-profit organization, that aspires to transform culture, making science, math, engineering, and technology as cool for kids as sports are today. The program is a life-changing, career-molding experience—and a lot of fun. In 2006, the competition will reach over 28,000 high-school-aged young people on over 1,125 teams in 33 regional events. FIRST teams came from Brazil, Canada, Ecuador, Israel, Mexico, the U.K., and almost every U.S. state. The competitions are high-tech spectator sporting events, the result of lots of focused brainstorming, real-world teamwork, dedicated mentoring, project timelines, and deadlines.”

“Colleges, universities, corporations, businesses, and individuals provide scholarships to our participants. Involved engineers experience again many of the reasons they chose engineering as a profession, and the companies they work for contribute to the community while they prepare and create their future workforce. The competition shows students that the technological fields hold many opportunities and that the basic concepts of science, math, engineering, and invention are exciting and interesting.”

Prospective Team Members

Hilltopper Robotics is always looking for more team members, mentors, and parent volunteers. With twenty-five team members, five professional mentors, and a handful of parent volunteers, there is plenty of room for more!

There are countless ways for students to be involved in Hilltopper Robotics. While designing, building, and programming the robots gets the most publicity, many opportunities exist for individuals interested in web design, 3-D animation, computer-aided design (CAD), graphic arts, video production, photography, writing, publicity, community outreach, and business administration. Students with every imaginable interest, talent or skill will find a place on the Hilltopper Robotics team.

There is always work to be done, but the team also finds time to have fun by attending competitions and enjoying ‘down time’ activities like seeing movies together and playing paintball. Last year team members competed in FIRST Robotics and VEX tournaments in Milwaukee, Chicago, Indianapolis and Atlanta. The tournaments are multi-day events filled with intense competition and fun…they are not to be missed!
